My first encounter with this prayer book was in the novel Catholic Joe Superhero by Steven S Thomas, in it he mentions in passing a box of green prayer books and a priest recommending that the main character pick up one. I reached out to Steve to find out if it was a specific book and he let me to this volume. You can download a pdf for free from the Mary Foundation site. I choose to pick up the Kindle edition. And you can order them for a little as $1 a booklet and shipping.

The description of the booklet is:

“Millions of Christians share a profound certainty that something has gone terribly wrong with our nation. An immense war in the spiritual realm is being waged to determine the future of America.

You can now do something about it every day by offering the three prayers featured in this book (it takes just 12 minutes):

● The Auxilium Christianorum Prayers
(From the well-known exorcist, Father Chad Ripperger, FSSP)

● The Divine Mercy Chaplet
(as requested by the Guardian Angel of America)

● The all-new Mantle of Mary Prayer

Join the Prayer Movement
By praying with us, you become part of the fast-growing Mantle of Mary Project, which was founded in 2020 by the lionhearted Father John Anthony Boughton, Vicar General of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal. (You can learn how this initiative started below.)

Everyone who prays with us is calling upon the Holy Spirit to bring forth the greatest of Great Awakenings and Illumination of Consciences.

Helping You Reach Others
This book also features a rousing call to action by bestselling novelist Bud Macfarlane (founder of the Mary Foundation).

For the first time ever, Bud connects little-known facts of America's Catholic history with profound theological truths to help you bring other brave souls into Father Boughton's "hidden" spiritual warfare movement through this life-changing little prayer book.”

The sections in this booklet are:

Help God Save America
Before You Begin
Auxilium Christianorum Prayers
The Divine Mercy Chaplet
Mantle of Mary Prayer
Why This Prayer Book Exists
More Daily Prayers
Would you like to introduce this free prayer book to your…
Free Gifts from the Mary Foundation

In the section ‘Why This Prayer Book Exists’ we are informed:

“Over thirty years ago, Our Lady inspired me to start the Mary Foundation. Since then, our amazing benefactors have distributed over twenty million free tools for evangelization in the form of recordings, booklets, scapulars, novels—and now, this little prayer book.

I am convinced this is the most important resource we have ever made available. Those who offer the prayers within these pages will help bring about God’s greatest public triumph through direct intervention since the parting of the Red Sea. You have an opportunity to influence the trajectory of entire nations, and thereby help billions of souls go to heaven who otherwise may have chosen to go to hell.”

Overall this is a good little prayer book. It is not extensive. It is clear concise and has a few key prayers. The price cannot be beat. It would be a great tool for beginners, or for interceding for the nation.

The Lenten Journey Words for Lent and Easter - Pope Benedict XVI - CTS Books

Over the last few years, I have read a number of books by and about Pope Benedict XVI. Of the popes in my lifetime, I find his writings of immense spiritual benefit. I would state that I underappreciated him until his resignation. And since then, I have read much. And with each piece I read I appreciate his wisdom, faith, and stand against modernism. This was another excellent read.

The descriptions of the book is:

“Pope Benedict's homilies, speeches, and messages have proved to be as insightful and interesting as was widely predicted when he became pope. This series of messages and homilies given from Ash Wednesday through Holy Week and Easter to
Pentecost of 2006 is full of spiritual gems and inspired teaching, opening new., profound and sometimes surprising perspectives on these familiar liturgical seasons. Benedict gives encouragement to all Christians to undertake the ultimate Lenten journey "preparing ourselves to experience, after the mystery of the Cross, the joy of Easter".”

The chapters in this edition are:

Ash Wednesday: On the Road!
New Heart, New Spirit
The Meaning of Lent
Fight against the Spirit of Evil
He washes our dirty feel
The Resurrection in us!
Kindle 1n us the fire of your love

I highlighted a number of passages while reading this volume, some of them are:

“Dear brothers and sisters today, with the Ash Wednesday Liturgy, the Lenten journey of 40 days begins that will lead us to the Easter Triduum, the memorial of the passion, death and Resurrection of the Lord, heart of the mystery of our salvation. It is a favourable time when the Church invites Christians to have a keener awareness of the redeeming work of Christ and to live their Baptism in greater depth.”

“With its 40-day duration, Lent has an indisputably evocative power. Indeed, it intends to recall some of the events that marked the life and history of ancient Israel, presenting its paradigmatic value anew also to us.”

“Lent, therefore, as a time of listening to the truth, is a favourable moment to convert to love, because the deep truth, the truth of God. is at the same time love.”

“May these be days of reflection and of intense prayer, in which we let ourselves be guided by the Word of God, which the liturgy offers to us in abundance. May Lent also be a time of fasting, penance and watchfulness of ourselves, and may we be convinced that the fight against sin is never-ending, because temptation is a daily reality and we all experience fragility and delusion.”

“On this penitential journey, may we be accompanied by Mary, Mother of the Redeemer, who is a teacher of listening and of faithful adherence to God. May the Virgin Most Holy help us to arrive purified and renewed in mind and in spirit, to celebrate the great mystery of Christ’s Pasch. With these sentiments, I wish you all a good and productive Lent.”

“The penitential procession with which we began today’s celebration has helped us enter the typical atmosphere of Lent, which is a personal and community pilgrimage of conversion and spiritual renewal.”

“Another symbolic rite, an exclusive gesture proper to the first day of Lent, is the imposition of ashes. What is its most significant meaning?

It is certainly not merely ritualistic, but something very deep that touches our hearts. It makes us understand the timeliness of the Prophet Joel's advice echoed in the First Reading, advice that still retains its salutary value for us: external gestures must always be matched by a sincere heart and consistent behaviour.”

“The true believer, aware of being a sinner, aspires with his whole self - spirit, heart and body - to divine forgiveness, as to a new creation that can restore joy and hope to him (cf. Ps 51150]:3, 5, 12, 14).”

“Every day, but particularly in Lent, Christians must face a struggle, like the one that Christ underwent in the desert of Judea, where for 40 days he was tempted by the devil, and then in Gethsemane, when he rejected the most severe temptation, accepting the Father’s will to the very end.”

“Lent reminds us, therefore, that Christian life is a never-ending combat in which the “weapons” of prayer, fasting and penance are used. Fighting against evil, against every form of selfishness and hate, and dying to oneself to live in God is the ascetic journey that every disciple of Jesus is called to make with humility and patience, with generosity and perseverance.”

“In Lent we will often hear re-echoing the invitation to convert and to believe in the Gospel, and we will be constantly encouraged to open our spirit to the power of divine grace. Let us cherish die abundance of teachings that the Church will be offering us in these weeks.”

“The season of Lent should not be faced with an ‘’old” spirit, as if it were a heavy and tedious obligation, but with the new spirit of those who have found the meaning of life in Jesus and in his Paschal Mystery and realize that henceforth everything must refer to him.”

“Today, the Gospel reminds us that Jesus, after being baptized in the River Jordan and impelled by the Holy Spirit who settled upon him and revealed him as the Christ, withdrew for 40 days into the Desert of Judea where he overcame the temptations of Satan (cf. Mk 1:12-13). Following their Teacher and Lord, Christians also enter the Lenten desert in spirit in order to face with him the “fight against the spirit of evil”.”

“Dear brothers and sisters, as I ask you to accompany me with your prayers, I assure you of my remembrance to the Lord, so that Lent may be for all Christians an opportunity for conversion and a more courageous effort towards holiness. For this, let us invoke the Virgin Mary’s motherly intercession.”

“To live one’s own life as a continual entry into this open space: this is the meaning of being baptized, of being Christian. This is the joy of the Easter Vigil. The Resurrection is not a thing of the past, the Resurrection has reached us and seized us. We grasp hold of it, we grasp hold of the risen Lord, and we know that he holds us firmly even when our hands grow weak.”

“Prior to the Ascension into Heaven, he ordered them “not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father” (cf. Ac 1:4-5); that is, he asked them to stay together to prepare themselves to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. And they gathered in prayer with Mary in the Upper Room, awaiting the promised event (cf. Ac 1:14).”

“To stay together was the condition laid down by Jesus in order to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit; the premise of their harmony was prolonged prayer. In this way we are offered a formidable lesson for every Christian community.”

“Human pride and egoism always create divisions, build walls of indifference, hate and violence. The Holy Spirit, on the other hand, makes hearts capable\ of understanding the languages of all, as he re-establishes the bridge of authentic communion between earth and heaven. The Holy Spirit is Love.”

“This is the mystery of Pentecost: the Holy Spirit illuminates the human spirit and. By revealing Christ Crucified and Risen, indicates the way to become more like him, that is, to be “the image and instrument of the love which flows from Christ" (Deus Caritas Est, n. 33). The Church, gathered with Mary as at her birth, today implores: “Veni, Sancte Spiritus! - Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love!” Amen.”

I hope those quotes give you a feel for this excellent volume. This was one of a number of volumes written by Pope Benedict XVI on Lent. The CTS had a wide range of booklets based on his sermons, audiences, and papal visits. I have been working on tracking them down, and some are very hard to find at a reasonable price or at all. I was glad to track this one down, I read it twice during lent and then passed it on to a friend.

This work was very accessible. I believe anyone with a secondary school education could read it and benefit from that reading. I love reading the volumes from Benedict XVI because they are clear, well researched, and in line with the 2000 year tradition of the Church. I have benefited from everything I have read by Benedict. This is an excellent volume. I can easily recommend it to any Catholic. Another great resource from the Catholic Truth Society.

33 Days to Eucharistic Glory - Matthew Kelly

I have read many volumes by Mathew Kelly over I have also listened to a number of audio talks and attended 2 virtual conferences. And I can state this is by far one of the best.

The first part of the description of this volume states:

I highlighted a few passages while reading this volume some of them are:

“You are about to embark on an incredible journey. This isn’t just another book. It is an invitation to participate in a sacred journey—a spiritual pilgrimage. It’s a guide that will lead you to the essence of what it means to be Catholic … and it will change your life in the most marvelous of ways.”

“But there is another aspect for us to keep in mind as we chart a path forward. I tried to capture it more than twenty years ago, in the opening line of the first edition of Rediscover Catholicism: “The Church (like so many other things in life) is not so much something we inherit from generations past, or take over from our predecessors, as it is something on loan to us from future generations.””

“The most effective way to slow and halt the exodus the Catholic Church is experiencing in the United States is to lead people to believe in the True Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. And the most effective way to bring people back to the Catholic Church will be by leading them to believe that Jesus is present in the Eucharist. And the most effective way to attract people to Catholicism who have never even considered becoming Catholic is by facilitating for them powerful encounters with Jesus Christ who lives among us today in the Eucharist.”

“The Eucharist. Jesus Christ—the King of Kings, the Lord of Lords, the Alpha and the Omega—truly present—Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity—in the Eucharist. He is the difference.”

“Jesus waits for you in the Eucharist, in our tabernacles and monstrances, and on the altar at every Mass. His message to you is unmistakable. In a world where so many people feel unseen, unheard, and unworthy, Jesus generously proclaims: I see you. I hear you. I know you. You are worthy. I am with you. I care. I am yours. You are Mine.”

“These are the five questions that humanity has been asking consciously and subconsciously since the beginning of human history. Although we may be unable to articulate them, you and I are constantly asking these questions in our daily lives. Whether we are aware of it or not, our whole existence is a searching to answer these five questions. We seek the answers to these questions directly and indirectly every day. And how we answer these questions determines the shape, form, and direction that our lives take. These are the five questions every heart longs to answer: Who am I? Where did I come from? What am I here for? How do I do it? Where am I going?”

“Life is a pilgrimage. We are just passing through this world.”

“For hundreds of years, if you attended a retreat or a parish mission, you didn’t have to wonder what the opening topic might be. You would have known. It would have been the Four Last Things. This was always the opening topic. The Four Last Things were also traditionally the topic of homilies preached on the four Sundays of Advent.”

“What are the Four Last Things? Death, Judgment, Heaven, and Hell. Saint Philip Neri advised, “Beginners in religion ought to exercise themselves principally in meditation on the Four Last Things.” And yet, more and more, we don’t reflect on these things at all, make great efforts to avoid them in conversation, and rarely hear them mentioned by spiritual teachers.”

“We are always hungry for something more complete, and God is the completeness that we yearn for from the depths of our soul.”

“Life is fleeting. In a moment we will all be gone. And what do you think comes next? Based on the teachings of Jesus Christ, the Catholic Church has always taught four things: Death, Judgment, Heaven, and Hell. Are you prepared to meet your Maker? And if you aren’t, who and what can prepare you?”

“The Sixth Shift: Just Keep Showing Up. No matter what, just keep showing up to prayer. Keep showing up to Mass. Keep showing up for your spiritual routines and rituals. We will explore this sixth shift in more detail tomorrow, but for now, it’s enough to be mindful that it’s not about what we are doing. It’s about what God is doing in us, through us, and with us—when we show up.”

“Nowhere is this advice more relevant than when it comes to the Eucharist. Imagine if Catholics had applied this simple wisdom to the practice of attending Mass over the past fifty years: Just keep showing up. Show up each Sunday regardless of how you feel or if it is convenient. Just show up and let God work on you. Imagine. The Catholic Church and the state of society would be completely different today if we had just kept showing up and letting God work.”

“The French novelist, Leon Bloy, once wrote, “The only real sadness, the only real failure, the only great tragedy in life, is not to become a saint.” While becoming a saint is the primary goal of the Christian life, most people never seriously consider it a possibility. Is it possible? Yes. How do we begin? By adopting the spiritual habits that the saints shared in common.”

“As one of the greatest writers of all time, Thomas said it more profoundly than I could ever hope to: “The Eucharist is the Sacrament of Love. It signifies Love. It produces love. The Eucharist is the consummation of the whole spiritual life.” Trust. Surrender. Believe. Receive.”

“These fruits of the Eucharist will help you become a-better-version-of-yourself each day. They will help you become all God created you to be. The grace of the Eucharist will help you do the next right thing. Do the next right thing often enough for long enough and amazing things will begin to happen. Trust. Surrender. Believe. Receive.”

“When I was about sixteen, my spiritual mentor had challenged me to go to daily Mass one day each week, so I began attending Mass on Tuesday evenings at our parish. It was at Mass during the week that I discovered the genius of Catholicism and the beauty of the Mass. It was at these quiet and intimate daily Mass experiences that this sacred ritual really began to ignite my love for Catholicism. I would follow the opening prayer, the readings, and the closing prayer in my missal, and the words began to probe my heart and ignite the fire in my soul. By some grace, I started to listen to the prayers of the Mass, really listen, and it was like the pieces of a puzzle coming together. It was only then that I began to see the incredible vision God has for our lives, for His Church, and for the world.”

“The first time you received Jesus in the Eucharist was a historic moment. You stepped into a 2,000 year history of men and women participating in Eucharistic Glory. You became part of an eternal community that includes angels and saints who all come to the same table for this one meal.”

“You have a place in the history of the Eucharist. You have a place in the history of the Catholic Church. You have a place at God’s altar. Every invitation to receive Jesus is an immeasurable honor. Every encounter has the power to be life changing. Harness the power of anticipation by preparing for Mass.”

“If you receive the Eucharist on the hands, you may have noticed that the Eucharistic Minister watches you until you consume the Host. Do you know why? Because Satanic cults and their worshippers understand who and what the Eucharist is. Their belief that Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist is unwavering. Satanists steal consecrated Hosts from Catholic churches and then mock Jesus and desecrate the Eucharist in a ceremony they refer to as a “Black Mass.” This is why the Eucharistic Minister ensures you consume the Host.”

“Saint Paul taught that we should always receive Holy Communion in a worthy manner. He made it clear that if we receive the Eucharist in an unworthy way, then we eat and drink condemnation upon ourselves. (1 Corinthians 11: 27–32)”

“Some moments are holy, some moments are unholy, and you get to decide. Fill your life with Holy Moments, one at a time.”

“This total self-giving is something we have witnessed at every Mass we have ever attended. In the Eucharist, Jesus gives His whole self to us completely and absolutely. And now, in this Eucharistic Consecration, we respond with love and generosity by pledging our whole selves to Jesus in the Eucharist.”

I hope those quotes and sample reflection give you a feel for this excellent volume. This is another book masterfully written by Mathew Kelly. It is a volume that will transform lives. It will challenge readers. And help us appreciate and grow in our love for the Eucharist. I believe this is the first consecration to the Eucharist. It was an amazing read. I have also picked up the version for children for my two youngest kids. This would be a great addition to any church, home, or school library. This is an excellent volume I can easily recommend. I challenge you to pick it up and read it.

Archangel - N.R. LaPoint - Mistcreek Book 3

This is the seventh novel and eighth story I have read by LaPoint. I said it before and I say it again, with each I am more impressed with his style, skills, and range. I had not read the description before picking this up. I picked up all his available books wile in the middle of reading a previous story. I loved the first book in this series, Chalk, Dusklight took the action, adventure and horror to a whole new level, and this one amped it up again. But in this one some new help comes, and some new skills are learned.

The description of this volume is:

“Ambushed on their way to Mistcreek Manor,
Raven, Kasumi, and Zita are forced into a lower level of the Continuum.
The fight leads them to Raven's old school.
But little is as it seems.

Powerful eldritch forces conspire against Mistcreek Manor.
The Qualitative Continuum weakens as the Seals that bind reality are shattered.
Abominations that should not be begin to gain a foothold in higher levels of the universe.

Armed with her ability to bring chalk drawings to life, Raven struggles
to get back home before it is destroyed.
Demons have found ways of breaking The Continuum,
but is there a way to heal it?”

This story has a prologue that gives us some more insight to Percy Dayspring’s background. We also find out why he has a weapon he supposedly should not and why his devotion and attention to Raven is so intense. Why he left the Knights of Saint Benedict. There is a statement at the end of the prologue:

““Our roles here will be revealed to us in due time. If not in this world, then in the next. Part of our duty here is to protect those we love.””

The sentiment or role, plans, and living out our duty is a key element of this volume in the series. Not only for Percy, but for his best friend Damien, for his fiancé Lady Raven Mistcreek, and for others we encounter in this story. But from that prologue we enter directly into the action, the opening words of the first chapter are:

“I was surrounded by dead bodies, and only half of them were my fault.

“What just happened?” I squeaked. “I thought the route was supposed to be safe!”

We were only a day out from Dusklight Castle on our way to Mistcreek Manor when the abominations struck in the middle of the night. Hideous constructs with the skins of beasts sewn over them, then animated by black magic. Mismatched claws and jaws, all worked around armatures of furniture, wires, bone, and other random objects.”

And from there the action continues across the world, up and down the continuum, and even through a portal into hell. This is by in far the most intense of the novels I have read by LaPoint. It was incredibly hard to put down. We have action, aadventure, battles, encounters with creatures assumed to be mythological, and support from friends both old and new. For a time Raven returns to Girls school from our realm, and strives to save the girls as she battles her way through the school and against the bosses at the end of each level. We have the appearance again of Saint Michael the Archangel, and we have gifts bestowed to help immediately and in the coming battles.

There is an epic battle for Mistcreek Manor. And though the story ends the war is far from over. The ending leaves leaves you desperate for the next installement and based on hits given in the story and the pace so far I can only assume there are still a number of volumes to be released in the series.

This was an excellent read. I have already shared the books with my niece and he mother wants to read them as well. Before I had even finished book 1 I sent a copy my nice as a birthday present and she is very excited about the book and series. And I am excited to share them with my youngest two also.

This was a great read in an excellent series. Catholic fiction at its best. I can easily recommend this story for anyone who loves a good fantasy with more than a modicum of horror mixed in. Another excellent volume from LaPoint’s masterful pen.

Legend of the Star Dragon - Tracey West and Graham Howells - Dragon Masters Book 25

My daughter who is now 13 loves these books. It used to take her more than a week to read one. Now she devoured this one in less than 40 minutes. But she still insists we will read them all. She hated the cliff hanger ending. However because we were late getting around to reading this one she only has about a month to wait for the next volume to release. This book and series is wonderful for young readers. It is an early chapter book or Middle Grade read. The next book in the series is #25 Cave of the Crystal Dragon followed by #26 Haunting of the Ghost Dragon. There is also a second special edition denounced The Epic Guide to Dragon Masters, and my daughter is still insistent we will read them all.

This is another great read in wonderful series. These books are well below my youngest daughters reading level. But she loves them so much. She reads for 20 minutes 5 days most weeks and a book in this series use to take her 10-12 days to read. This one she read in just under 2 sittings, just a bit faster than the last one. I have said it before and I state it again, this series gets better and better. It has serious staying power.

In this volume we have several surprises, and to be honest our biggest cliff hanger ending yet! One surprise is when a Dragon masters Dragon stone is stolen. This is book 25 but we have reread a few of the volumes, making it the 37th time we have read a book in the series together, and she has read most of them 3 or 4 times waiting for new ones to come out. As a family we eagerly await the new volumes that have been announced. In this volume Graham Howells returns as the illustrator, he has illustrated a few in the series. But let us return to this volume.

The last part of the description of this volume is:

This story is the continuation of a darker and longer story line than any of the others in the series. My daughter reads through the chapter titles before beginning, and she guesses what might happen. The chapters this time are:

The Star Flute
The Great Library
A Starry Tale
Help from Darpan
Guardian of the Temple
A Surprise in the Shadows
Breaking Through
A Lost Connection
The Summoning
Stella and Nova
The Sky Battle
Super Shine!
Clear Skies
Wizard Worries
The Star Stone
A Friend in Need

The story continues directly from the last. This time we meet a new dragon master, and Drake asks Petra for help. In this volume we encounter a Griffin, we battle Chaya and Aruna again. And we encounter sky-shadow-creatures. We meet Nova the star dragon from legends and her dragon master Stella. And the story ends with a great surprise about Griffith. But to find out what you will need to read this volume.

My daughter gave it a 4.5 out of 5. She really did not like the surprise at the end of the story. She thought this one would end a story arc, but it seems to be setting up the next. She loved that there was again sign language in this volume. And there was music including bars you could try and play yourself.

With being 26 books into a series my daughter has made a chart of the dragons, their masters, and their primary powers, and is now adding secondary powers as they are discovered.  This is another excellent read in a great series. The series has real staying power. Even though they are well below my daughters reading level she still loves them! I believe they will be lifelong favourites. We can easily recommend this book and series!
