Changing Trends eBooks vs Physical books

Changing Trends eBooks vs Physical Books

I have wanted to write this article for a while but it has not been pressing so kept getting put off. 2011 was the year of the eBook for me. It was the first year that I read more eBooks than physical books (if you take picture books out of the mix). In fact there were a number of books I wanted to read that kept getting put off because I had the physical book and not an eBook and therefore they kept getting pushed down my To Be Read list. I even went so far as to get eBooks for some of the books I had physical copies of so that I would read them sooner. In 2011, I read 163 books, not my best year but not bad considering we had a third child and life is so different with a newborn. The breakdown of what I read is as follows:

87 Physical Books
50 Were Picture Books
6 no eBook available.

76 eBooks read

27 Kobo
14 iPhone
12 BlackBerry
10 on my PC
7 iPad
5 MacBook Pro
2 BlackBerry Playbook

I read across platforms and devices. I have the Kindle, Kobo, Adobe Digital Editions and Calibre applications installed on my Windows 7 PC, Windows 7 Virtual machine and on my MacBook pro laptop. On My iPhone and iPad I also have iBooks, Kindle and Kobo applications installed. I sometimes switch what book I have on the go and read the same book across devices but more often I have books on the go in each application on each device. Of the 50 books that I have read this year (January 1st through March 6th 2012, almost 40 have been in eBook format.) As much as I love books, the look, the feel, and I once dreamed of a den that was floor to ceiling bookcases, I have stopped getting books unless I need to. Give me the data file and let me access it across devices anytime anywhere. And let me carry my whole library in my pocket! And that's how Steven sees it!
