It is hard to say this volume is either a long short story or a short novella. But no matter what classification you put it in it is a great read. I loved reading Jane’s Seven Angels Short Story Bundle, that collection included Short stores numbered 2.1-2.4 and some other stories. This one is numbered 5.5, thus placing it well after the other stories from this series that were in the bundle. And currently is the last piece in the Archangels Series. As I have mentioned before I cannot speak to the theology presented in these stories. But as religious fiction, Christian fiction, and specifically Catholic fiction that are great read that will really get you thinking. When  we look at encounters with Angels in the bible, especially the book of Tobit, we know that God can use Angels in many different ways. Jane Lebak’s skill is in helping us to encounter angels in story, and through that to wonder about them in our life, our world, and as God’s agents.

This story is set in the time of ancient Rome. But Rome well after Christianity has begun to spread. It is the story of a guardian angel who upon seeing his new born charge being abandoned at the side of the road, sweeps up the child and takes him to heaven. Now the guardian, Gabriel, and Gabriel’s bond are trying to seek God’s will and do the right thing, all while looking after a new born.

It is interesting seeing the Angels take human form, with all that entails. And thinking back on the adventure in Tobit. It is intriguing to picture the angels, in prayer, seeking and doing God’s will. And reporting to the Throne of God upon completion of missions. It is hard reading about this time in history when children could be left by the side of the road for strangers, slavers, or wild animals. And it is hard to think of some of the laws and societal changes in our own day.

This is an excellent story and like all I have read by Lebak. It is not always an easy read but it is a great read. I give it top marks. If you have read other books by Lebak you will love this one, and if you have not it is a great novella, so check it out.
