Top Ten Fiction and Non-Fiction Books Third Quarter 2019

Top Ten Fiction and Non-Fiction Books Third Quarter 2019

This quarter I have read 89 books, and a total of 297 to date this year. I am reading at the pace of about a book and a quarter a day.  Of those a total of 46 books received 5/5 stars and are first time reads and are therefor eligible for this quarters top ten list. That left me to choose from 16 non-fiction and 28 fiction.

Here is my top ten fiction and non-fiction books of the third quarter of 2019.

Bonus:

Books by Maureen Jennings
Jack Reacher Books by Lee Child

One of the big differences for a second time this quarter is reading mystery – suspense – crime novels. Especially those by Lee Child and Maureen Jennings. Also this quarter I have read 7 of the 9 books available by Fiorella de Maria. All 7 received 5/5 stars. My reading has been up over each of the last few years. I attribute part of it to Brandon Vogt’s course Read More Books Now, removing all games but 1 brain game from my devices. And I now commute to work on a bus and read on the bus every day. Last quarter was an almost equal balance between fiction and non-fiction, this time it was about 2/3rds fiction.

Note: I do not include books that have been read in previous years and were reread this year in my top ten lists, they are in the bonus section. It was no easy task making this quarter. But if you want more options check out my favorite books year by year list

Never Go Back - Lee Child - Jack Reacher Book 18

Never Go Back
Jack Reacher Book 18
Lee Child
Penguin Random House Canada
ISBN 9780399594977
eISBN 9780440339373
ASIN B00B0LP48G

After reading this story and 29 other Reacher novels and shot stories over the last 6 months I now understand why so many people were upset when Tom Cruise was cast in the role of Reacher. In fact, I read all the other Reacher stories before finally reading the two that were movies with Cruise. That being said I was very surprised by this story and consider it one of the most interesting in the lot. This was a little harder reading this one because of having seen the movie. It is difficult not to overlay the images and scenes from the movie with the book. But in the end, I did enjoy the story. And there are significant differences. I have read 29 Reacher stories in the last 25 weeks. And now I must wait for the next one to release. I started by chance I was picking up the current release because the description caught my attention when I was looking at it as a gift for my father. That first one, Past Tense, was great and many since have been excellent reads. But back to this story.

Chronologically the few novels leading up to this one have Reacher heading towards a specific path and a specific person. He is heading towards Virginia and the current CO of the 100th, a Major Susan Turner. When he arrives he is sent right up to her office, which was formerly his office. But Susan is not behind the desk, in fact it is a lieutenant colonel Morgan was behind the desk. Reacher is informed that Turner has been arrested, and that he has been recalled into the Military. And thus, begins an adventure that goes from coast to coast and back, and also includes a jail break, many broken bones, and some serious consequences. At one point the police, FBI, and Military police are all looking to be the ones to bring Reacher in. But Reacher is not an easy guy to find and when he knows he is being hunted it becomes even more difficult.

The story focuses around two cases against Reacher and the case against Turner. Together the two of them work out all three issues by trying to figure out who wants them off the table and why.

The Reacher stories always entertain. Some of them have a lot of sex, and some of them have a lot of violence. This one has a little of both but is more story driven than action driven than most of the books in the series. And this one was worth the read. There is no comparison to the movie, so even if you say the movie, weather you liked it or not you should give this story a try. A great read in the crime literature genre, and as mentioned one of my favorites of all the Reacher books. And while I am waiting for the next Reacher novel to be published, I am going to start reading the Jack books by Diane Capri, about FBI agent Kim Otto trying to track down Reacher.

Another great read in the Reacher series.

It has been a few years since I have read a Gordon Korman novel. In fact it has been 9 years. I was impressed with both his volumes in the original 39 Clues Series, and read one other, and just never got back to reading anything else. But after reading this volume I have found about a half dozen by him that are now on my wish list. My son is in grade 6 and come home from school talking about this book. They are reading it together in class. And each student will read a chapter to the class. And they already have several assignments that will span the fall working on this book and using it as a jumping off point. I picked up the eBook so that both my son and I could be reading it at the same time. When he gets excited about a school book he wants to get it read and not wait for the rest of the class.

This story is a really intriguing concept. Chase, the school bully, and football champ falls off his roof over summer break and has amnesia. Once he is back at school he hangs out with people he would not have before, even joining the video club. He slowly learns that he was not a nice guy, a very not nice guy. He also realized his old best friends might not really be friends at all. He is struggling with questions about who he really is and who he wants to be. His relationships have changed with his mom, his stepmom and his stepsister. But the school seems to be holding its breath for the old Chase to reappear. When he ends up in a jam, he makes a split decision to save his own hide even though it seems to cost him everything he now cares about.

This is a great story for students and for their parents. I have encountered coworkers that are much like old Chase. And, I have seen a few change their stripes, but few and far between. The story is excellent for discussions, and I could see it being a great classroom read. My son and I have already had three conversations about different events in the story. And some carry over into events he has experienced at school. It is an excellent read, and I am glad my sons’ class is reading it, and that he mentioned it so I could give it a read as well.

This is an excellent book! And as I mentioned earlier, I have already added 6 other Korman titles to my wish list, for future reading.

CTS Booklet B677

I really do love the CTS books and booklets ! There are so many great reads, and wonderful series. And this ‘Saints of the Isles’ is one of my favorite series to date. This is the eighth book in this series from the Catholic Truth Society that I have read. And I loved it. I have read almost 100 books and booklets from the Catholic Truth Society in the last year and a half. Many have been great reads, and I have read books from several excellent series. I love this series that focuses on the Saints of the Isles. It has been inspiring, challenging, and encouraging to read about the Saints and Martyrs of the British Isles. Through my religious studies degree, with a focus on Roman Catholic Thought, I had encountered saints from all over the world, and the great and lesser known saints of Europe. But this series is opening my eyes to Saints that are part of my heritage, saints from Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales. These are incredible books about amazing saints. It is a part of our history we need to be reminded of. And to be inspired by them and their lives, and as in the case of More also his death.

That would be how I would summarize this series. But this specific book is on Saint Thomas More.  This series and this book will inspire, encourage, and challenge us in our faith! The sections in this booklet are:

Introduction
“In the Shadow of Piety”
More’s early life
Education
More’s vocation
Against pride
Common sanctity
In the service of the King

The Home of Humanity
Marriage and remarriage
Children’s education
Educating daughters
Ambition

A Reformer’s Dream
Christian humanism
Utopia
An island of intelligent imagination

More after Luther
From Lord Chancellor to Prisoner
The “Great Matter”
Dead man walking

“Everlasting Liberty”
‘The Sadness of Christ’
Final letters
The trial
Execution

The Teeth of the Church
More on More - Further Reading
A Godly Meditation

Of all the saints in this series, I was most familiar with More before reading this volume. So, in some ways this little booklet served as a refresher. I am sure that most people raised in an English-speaking country would know the name Thomas More. Either from history class or even drama class and studying the play about his life. We are told in the introduction:

“A modern biography is certainly not what medieval Christians enjoyed as “lives of the saints.” Authorial intentions being quite different, so were the reader’s expectations. In the history of the genre, the life of Thomas More (1478-1535) seems to have particular relevance. First, because no other figure in the landscape of his time, much less a layman, knew of such an intense biographical interest so soon after death. Once the conspiracy of silence around someone who had been executed as a traitor to crown and country was lifted, half a dozen writers took up their pens to record his life and martyrdom. These were William Roper, Nicholas Harpsfield, Thomas Stapleton, an anonymous writer known as “Ro. Ba.”, and two more whose works have not come down to us.”

And we are told:

“Today’s biographies tend to be huge books, and a very small one like this, a mere sketch, might seem rather pointless. But the very idea of biography is not to tell everything about a person (impossible, in any case, to write or to read) but to disclose the reasons and causes - the bios, or vital force behind that person’s actions and words.”

And concludes with:

“Unless all my reading, editing, translating, and learning from Thomas More has been a waste, I am certain that he would have wanted nothing but the truth about him, to make us see him “as he really was.” Embraced now in the unconditional love of the Trinity in heaven, he knows himself in the best possible way, perhaps the only way, and at least those who share his Creed read about him also to learn more of the splendid and merciful light of Christ. Thus, as I embark in this biographical sketch, …”

I think that captures the essence of the book, the series and many of the CTS booklets. Getting to the essence of something. And in this case I agree with the author in that More would undoubtedly appreciate that approach.

This bios will give highlights of More’s life, his ministry, and ultimately his death. He is often hailed as a Catholic humanist, and also a martyr. More died for the faith, a faith that as he grew older became every more important in his life. It is a sentiment that I feel echo’s in my own life.

Lockdown - Jack Heath - Liars Book 4

Lockdown
Liars Book 4
ISBN 9781742993423
eISBN 9781743834671
ASIN B07SPT3MG6

This series is getting better with every book! This is the fourth of five books in the Liars series. I am very thankful that the eBooks are available globally. This book is a great MG/YA read. It has a fast pace. Lots of action and Jarli and his friends getting caught in the middle of another of master criminal Viper’s plots. The majority of this story takes place either in or immediately around the Kelton Hospital.

The story begins with Jarli and his classmates on a school trip to the local hospital. While there the facility is taken over by members of Viper’s crew. They are all using snake names as aliases. These armed thugs are using unusual weapons. Crossbows, cutlasses, and more. Most of the students are barricaded in an operating theatre with two doctors and an injured man. But Jarli and Anya are stuck on the outside. The criminals have brought jammers with them, so no one is able to get a signal out. Anya seems to have some series skill, and soon her and Jarli have escaped and are trying to get a message to the police.

Later with the help of a suspended cop, and their school nurse, they try something very risky. And hopefully they can save their friends and if not stop at least put a dent in Vipers plans. While Jarli and Anya are racing around on the outside, his friends Doug and Bess are trying what they canto protect their classmates and help the injured man.

The plot races from beginning to end. The story takes place over the period of several hours, all on the same day. Between the thugs on site, and Viper controlling them remotely. Bianco a suspended cop wanting to help and to clear her name. And two different people claiming that they know what Viper looks like. We appear to be racing breakneck towards the conclusion of this series in the next volume.

This book and this series are very well written. Heath has written this series with the tweens and teens in mind, but it can be enjoyed by any reader who just enjoy great reads. And I think the books would make an excellent miniseries on TV. I am sure if you give this series a try you will be entertained!

Robert Southwell Priest,Poet and Martyr - Fiorella De Maria - CTS Saints of the Isles Series

Robert Southwell:
Priest,Poet and Martyr
CTS Saints of the Isles Series
Fiorella De Maria
Catholic Truth Society
ISBN 9781860822155
CTS Booklet B674

My first reaction to reading this booklet was that it was a double blessing to read this book. It is out of print and was not easy to track down. It is one of the best of the CTS Saints of the Isles Series. And I have been trying to read all of Fiorella De Maria's books. The Saints of the Isles of one of my favorites among the CTS series. In the last year and a bit, I have read and reviewed over 90 books from the Catholic Truth Society. And in the last month I have read and reviewed 4 of the novels by Fiorella De Maria. The description on the back cover of this booklet states:

“With his father an ambitious (and protestant) courtier to Queen Elizabeth, Robert was brought up in the Catholic faith by his mother. Accomplished writer of prose and poetry, he worked as a priest with great Zealand success around London from 1586-1592. He was betrayed, tortured with extreme severity and imprisoned in the Tower. At 33 he was executed at Tyburn, London, (near today’s marble arch) profession his faith and his priesthood, and praying for his enemies. One of the forty Martyrs, he was canonised in 1970.

The Saints of the Isles series brings together telling accounts of the extraordinary lives of men and women from the British Isles – lives of holiness, courage and true discipleship to Christ and the Gospel message.”

The chapters in this volume are:

Introduction
Catholicism in England under Elizabeth
The Early Life of Robert Southwell
The Student in Exile
Arrival in England
Life on the English mission
Robert Southwell the Poet
Robert Southwell and Shakespeare
Arrest and Torture
Robert Southwell on Trail
‘The Scaffold was the Block Where Ease I Found …’
Robert Southwell: A Saint for England
Bibliography
Endnotes

This book was a fascinating read. I first encountered Robert Southwell in another book in this series, Forty Martyrs of England and Wales by James Walsh. Southwell was one of several saints from that booklet that I wanted to go further in my reading. And this booklet was an excellent next step. Fiorella does an amazing job of fleshing out the life of this saint in just under 60 pages. The booklet can easily be read in a single afternoon. I have read it once and am already part way through it again.

This book sticks to the facts. Especially around his formative years and in relation to Shakespeare. The one thing that was not in the book that I would have loved was a prayer. Either a prayer to Saint John Southworth or one of the ones he wrote. There were a number of quotes from his writings. And the extensive bibliography will provide great jumping off points for exploring either his poetry, his writings or going deeper into his life and ministry.

As much as I love Fiorella's fiction after reading this book, I hope she writes more books about saints. For her fiction is excellent but this book was amazing. This book is an excellent read. And though currently out of print well worth tracking down.
