Lent with the Saints:
Sayings and Meditations

CTS Booklet D677

This was the third book by J.B. Barry Midgley that I have read. I was so impressed with the first two that I have been trying to track down all of his books. I believe that he has written 28 books and that 26 of them are from the Catholic Truth Society. This book is out-of-print but well worth tracking down. It is a wonderful collection of sayings, quotes and meditations. The description on the back of the book is:

“The forty days of Lent provide Christians, and those preparing for baptism, with an intense period of preparation for the 'Feast of all Feasts', Easter, the 'Passover of the Lord'. This collection of sayings and meditations dwells on the central Lenten themes of prayer, conversion, repentance, fasting, almsgiving and self-denial, as lived from apostolic times until the present day. This little companion to private reflection will offer ready sustenance to those setting out on the joyful road to Easter.”

The sections in the book are:

The Passover of the lord
Preparing for the Feast of Feasts
Call to Prayer
Call to Conversion and Repentance
Call to Almsgiving and Charity
Call to Penance, Self-denial and Fasting
Looking towards Easter
Index

The index is four pages it breaks it down by source of who or which biblical book. Each of the ‘Call to’ sections contain sub sections of some of the following:

Biblical Figures
The Early Church and Fathers
Saints Through the Ages
Modern Saints
Modern Writers

The book contains 88 quotes from 72 sources. Many of the saints I had encountered before. There were a few new saints, and some excellent quotes. It is an excellent little volume, and has companion volumes Advent & Christmastide with the Saints, Stations of the Cross and Resurrection with the Saints and The Eucharist with the Saints. I have read one of the others and look forward to the others when I can track them down.

It can be read from beginning to end, or you can randomly flip it open and read a few points. This is a book I will have on my side table this lent and likely many to come. Another excellent read from CTS.

Note: This book is part of a series of reviews: 2020 Catholic Reading Plan! For other reviews of books from the Catholic Truth Society click here.
