This is the second book I have read from the pen of Joan L. Kelly, a the first was a first book in a new mystery series, Mibs Monahan Mysteries, called A Thread of Evidence. While working on the review of that one, I found out about this one and decided to give it a read. The description of this volume is:

“A boy whose village is attacked holds fast to his faith. With the help of an elderly priest, a special chalice, and a love for the Eucharist, he grows up with compassion. Later, he visits the United States and learns about the fraternal men's organization, the Knights of Columbus and their good works. This book was written by Joan L. Kelly to show her support for today's Knights of Columbus in their charitable work. This work acts as a prelude to introduce a brief history of the organization.”

The dedication of the book states:

“In honor of the Catholic Men who belong to the Knights of Columbus and offer their lives to God; quietly marching through ordinary, everyday activities and dedicating themselves to principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism.”

And we are informed that:

“The first part of this book is a fictional story about courage and faith. The second part is a short history about the Knights of Columbus and some of the charitable services they perform throughout the World.”

This volume is a great little read. The first part was very moving. And the second part is a great history. And even though my own Father was an active member of the Knights for many years I do not recall ever hearing about the chalice ceremony or tradition.

The story part of this book was incredibly moving. It was hard to put it down. And thought it is indeed a short story it is very well written. The history portion is just as interesting.

This is a fantastic little volume available at a great price. I highly recommend this book!

Note: This book is part of a series of reviews: 2021 Catholic Reading Plan!
