This was the fifth novel I have read by Declan Finn in the last 2 months. I have ready the first two in his Saint Tommy Series; Hell Spawn and Death Cult. I now understand why so many people rave about his works. Before reading book 1, I had also picked up White Ops Book 1, but got going on the Saint Tommy Series first. I have also previously picked up several anthologies that Finn has contributed to, that I have not got around to reading. They as well will be bumped up in my to be read pile. The hard park of discovering a new favourite author who is very prolific is there are many works to choose from. I believe at the time of writing this that fin has 38 published books and short stories, including this series which is to be up to 12 books within a few months. For my fiction reading I have been alternating books by Finn, Andrew Grant (aka Andrew Child), and J.D. Kirk. I am currently reading 2 in this series and then a White Ops book.
The description of this story is:
“Detective Tommy Nolan is having a bad day.
First, the celebrant was murdered during mass. Then the SWAT team knocked down his door trying to kill him.
With a million dollar bounty on his head, every gunman and demonic monster is coming out of the pit to collect it.
Tommy has to discover who's out to make him a martyr before he becomes a saint for real.”
I was a little hesitant to start this series. It seemed a little over the top. And from the authors, publishing people, and friends it was so hyped I was afraid it would disappoint. It did not! In fact before I had finished the first 2 I hade picked up nearly a dozen other works from Finn’s pen. The fist story was great, the second even better, and this one was most excellent.
This story races from beginning to end. I have used the term break neck pace previously, this volume eclipsed them all. This book is packed with action. A fair bit of humour. And the underlying theme of faith just enhances it all. I am not sure of Tommy is loosely based upon the author himself, but I could see it. Fighting evil and rattling off prayers. Using Holy Water as a new weapon in the arsenal of the police against even, especially supernatural beings like vampires. Tommy stopping in a busy hectic day, for time of prayer, rising in a local church, even with a bounty on his head that keeps, there is just so much to love about this book and the whole series so far.
Tommy is a man who loves God, his wife and family, and his job. He strives to be the best version of himself. He is not willing to compromise his faith, or the law. Picture a Catholic John Wick, stopping at nothing to get the job done.
This is an extremely entertaining story an excellent read in an amazing series. I look forward to the rest of the books in this series, and other offerings from Declan’s pen.
