I absolutely love reading Gordon Korman books, either by myself or with one or more of my children. This story was originally published in 2002 by Scholastic Canada. It has since been through several reprinting’s including editions from Hyperion an imprint of Disney Books, Scholastic, Turtleback, and the latest English edition from Little, Brown and Company. And that does not count the large print edition or several other language editions. I think my favourite cover is either the current edition or the 2003 Scholastic US edition.

As I have stated in reviews of several of Korman’s books over the last few months: mid last year, in the summer of 2022, Korman published his 100th book. Yes you read that correctly, his hundredth book. My introduction to Korman’s works was the 39 Clues back in 2009. Since then I have read almost 30 of his books. But a drop in the buck, but with each one I read I am entertained and often challenged. My son often reads these books to me or with me. I picked up this to read next because someone commented on a review of another volume that this was one of their favourites. So it jumped to the top of my pile. And now my son is rereading it to me. At my current pace of about a book a week. In a year and a half I should be caught up.

My son and I started reading Gordon Korman books together a few years ago, when he was given one as an end of year gift by his teacher. She gave the whole class the same Scholastic edition and wrote a note to each student in their copy of the book. Prior to that I had a read a few of his contributions to the 39 Clues series and had enjoyed them. My son and I have mostly been reading his more recent titles. I have read about 25 over the last 6 months.

The description of this volume states:

“Vince Luca is just like any other high school guy. His best friend, Alex, is trying to score vicariously through him; his brother is a giant pain; and his father keeps bugging him to get motivated. There is just one thing that really sets him apart from other kids -- his father happens to be the head of a powerful crime organization.

Needless to say, Vince's family's connections can put a serious crimp in his dating life. How is he supposed to explain to a girl what his father does for a living? But when Vince finally meets a girl who seems to be worth the trouble, her family turns out to be the biggest problem of all. Because father is an FBI agent -- the one who wants to put Vince's father away for good.”

This book was released during the height of The Sapranos popularity. And Films and TV shows focused on the mob go through cycles of popularity and wax and wane in popular culture and have for decades now. So the story written for teens, with a teen focus on life in the family and about the family business was sure to be a hit. On Goodreads this one has almost 6800 reviews and a 3.7 star average and over 100 on Amazon and a4.5 star average there at the writing of this review. I was using adaptive technology and listening to this while driving to pick up my daughter out of town, who is almost 17, she heard a bit when she first hopped in the car and asked if we could keep listening. She listened to the rest of the book and asked to read the second when I told her there was a continuation.

This story is for a more mature audience. There is a lot of making out. There are stories about punishments for crossing or failing a mob boss. High school students attending a university frat party, and there is an incident with a call girl. That being said it was a hilarious read. It races from the beginning straight through. Terrific pace, great characters, amazing plot and Korman executed on it perfectly! Oh and least I forget Vince’s love interest is the daughter of the who has spent years trying to catch his father! Oh Vey!

If I had been reading instead of listing it would have been just as hard to put it down. We got home and Sat in the driveway on a cold winter day to finish the story. This is another excellent read from Korman’s pen. And I look forward to reading the second story Son of the Mob 2: Hollywood Hustle
