The Tooth Fairy MurderS - Barry Hutchinson

The Tooth Fairy MurderS

About a year before reading this I encountered the works of J.D. Kirk I also discovered that Kirk publishes children’s books as Barry Hutchison, and other adult fiction as Barry J. Hutchison. I have read 21 stories published under the Kirk name and I am now working my way theough the ones under the Hutchinson names, this is the 14 under that name. He is coming up on 200 books across the three pen names. If I had known that or I might not have picked up this first one. But I am very thankful I did. Friends call me a ‘completionist’ in that when I find an author I like, I try to read everything they have published. I have enjoyed all I have read from his pen and this one was no different. This is one of two volumes Hitchison did for Fiction Express which is a live interactive writing process. And I believe that these two are the only ones I am aware of that do not have eBook editions. This volume is not available in print, it is only available via Fiction Express school access.

The description of this story is:

“Someone is murdering Tooth Fairies. The gnomes know something, but they're not talking. When a human boy, Connor Goodwin, is framed for the crimes, there is only one man who can help him. One man whose very existence is dedicated to making sure bad people get what's coming to them. One man, who will stop at nothing to ensure justice prevails, even if that means being punched in the face a lot. His name is Troy Thunder, agent of KARMA, an organisation dedicated to making sure everyone gets their just desserts. To clear Connor's name he's going to have to solve the mystery himself. ... perhaps with a little help from his friends! The Tooth Fairy Murders is a supernatural whodunnit, with excitement and mystery from start to finish. Bad things are happening to good people and Troy Thunder isn't about to let that stand.”

At the time this book was written readers could choose the direction of the next chapter and within a week the author would write it. The chapters in the book are:

Fairies, Fairies Everywhere
What the Gnomes Know
Into the Darkness
Tea Party of Terror
Case Closed

This story was a lot of fun. It is a story about a young man who Who wakes up and is arrested by the fairy police. He is charged with killing Tooth Fairies, including the one found dead under his pillow. While in custody he is spring by his only ally, a Troy Thunder, an agent with KARMA. And what follows is a whirlwind of a night with a few twists and turns that have some surprises that echo those in Monsters Inc. I highlighted a few passages while reading this, which for me is unusual reading fiction. They were:

“Connor's eyes crept down. A tiny man, no bigger than an action figure, stood on the window ledge. One of his hands was tapping· against the glass. In the other, he held an open wallet. There was a miniscule ID card and a shiny metal star inside.”

“"Connor Goodwin," she began, "under the authority of PFAMFDAPA-" she pronounced the letters as a single word, which made her spit quite a lot - "I am placing you under arrest."”

“"PFAMFDAPA," said Troy. He pronounced it as a single word, and Connor felt a damp spray on the back of his neck. "That's who arrested you. The Pixie, Fairy and Magical Folk Defence and Protection Agency. PFAMFDAPA."”

“"KARMA. That stands for: Kittens and Robots Manipulate Apples," Troy said.”

This volume is currently only available on the Fiction Express site. Which is a great pity. I am certain if there was a print edition fans of Hutchison’s works would flock to it. Like a Tooth fairy to Rugby players. This is a very fun read a great early chapter book or Middle grade read. I am glad I was able read it, and wish it and the other volume from Fiction Express by Hutchison was available as eBooks. If you can access this volume I highly recommend it, and if you have school access to Fiction Express give it a read, it is a highly entertaining story.
