I have read a few of Ann’s adult fiction and non-fiction titles. I believe this is the only volume she was written for children. I have had it on my kindle for a while now. It is my loss that I did not read it sooner. I would have loved to have read this with my children when they were younger, especially my youngest daughter.
The description of this volume states:
“Once upon a time, a young girl lived a life full of wonder and imagination. Three farm family stories in one book: Tally-Ho & Family, Tally-Ho Bees & Honey, and Tally-Ho & The Dear Little Critters. Wholesome family adventures with loving parents, strong, big brothers, understanding sisters, fluffy chicks, adorable kittens, and a lively possum. A wonderful read-aloud for the whole family. Gorgeous illustrations!”
Another description states:
“There are three stories about a young home-schooled girl growing up in the country with her large, talented, and very imaginative family.”
As can be seen by the description this is three stories in one. They are:
Tally-Ho & Family
Tally-Ho Bees & Honey
Tally-Ho & The Dear Little Critters
Each could have been published separately but this volume contains all three stories. The first story details a few days in the life of Tally Ho, from her rising and morning prayers to evening prayers, though she may get out of bed after prayers. It details the family life, at work, and at play. Chores, home-schooling, and spending time in nature. The second adventure is an encounter with swarming bees. Tally Ho hears it from her room in the morning, and the family reacts when the kids find them in the garden. It teaches a cute lesson about bees and looking after them. The final story has to do with small animals, some the family wants around and some not. It shows life in the country and a family working together.
The illustrations are by Christine deShazo and are bright and vibrant. Sometimes whole page illustrations with words over the images and sometimes the illustrations shaped around and under the words. They illustrations are fun and really add to the stories. I especially loved some of the use of silhouettes on some of the pages. They evoke action and bring the stories to life on a new level.
Frailey has written a wonderful little volume, three tales of joy, spontaneity, duty and family. It is an excellent little picture book and would be a great addition to any home, school or church library. A great picture book sure to become a family favourite.
