Nobody - Jennifer Lynn Barnes - aka At First Sight

Last year my daughter and I read The Naturals together. Or rather I read them, and she was reading one in class and had to wait before moving on. We both really enjoyed the series. My daughter was reading this and wanted someone to rant to without getting spoilers. She asked me to read it. So I read it over a couple of days. It was published the same year as the first book in The Naturals series but after 10 of her other works. I was surprised this and book 1 of The Naturals released in the same year because they have very different feels and I am surprised this ended as a standalone because it could have easily been the start of a series, with both prequels and continuations of this story.

The description of this volume states:

“Author of the popular BookTok series The Inheritance GamesJennifer Lynn Barnes introduces us to . . . Nobody.

There are people in this world who are Nobody. No one sees them. No one notices them. They live their lives under the radar, forgotten as soon as you turn away.

That's why they make the perfect assassins.

The Institute finds these people when they're young and takes them away for training. But an untrained Nobody is a threat to their organization. And threats must be eliminated.

Claire has been invisible her whole life, missed by the Institute's monitoring. But now they've ID'ed her and have sent Nix to remove her. Yet the moment Nix lays eyes on her, he can't make the hit. It's as if Claire and Nix are the only people in the world for each other. And they are—because no one else can really see them.”

The book is a little too teen romance for me. But then I am not the target audience. Being in my mid-fifties. But it does have a strong enough story it did not end up on me ‘did not finish pile’. In some ways it reminds me of the TV series The Pretender, which ran for 1996-2000. A number of the elements overlap, including being taken by an organization and raised from a young age, being trained to maximize skills and talents, and being responsible for deaths.

The story moves at a quick pace. Two individuals who always felt different find out they are different in the same way. Both their worlds are turned upside down, one has found a purpose and a meaning, the other realizes past mistakes and sets to atone for them. They must work together to overcome a longstanding secret organization. But even with all their skills and powers can they do it?

To find out you will need to read this story about Nix and Claire.

Hope An Anchor for the Soul 30 Daily Devotions - Amy Welborn

I picked up this volume for two reasons. The first it was by Amy Welborn and I have loved everything I have read from her masterful pen. And the second was it was a book for the Jubilee of Hope in 2025. It is an excellent little volume.

The description of this volume is:

“In sync with the 2025 Jubilee Year, popular author Amy Welborn takes readers on a 30-day personal pilgrimage of hope. Each day’s devotional reflection is anchored by Scripture, prayerful reminders, encouragement and virtuous actions for grounding readers in Christian hope and equipping them to grow in hope and bring that hope to the world. Perfect for any time of year!”

I worked through the digital edition of the book, but the booklet would be great as well. The days are just numbered 1-30. There is no introduction or conclusion; just the 30 reflections or meditations. Each days starts with a quote from scripture, contains a written meditation and then a Reflect\Pray\Act section at the end.

A sample day is:

Day 13

For in hope we were saved. Now hope that sees for itself is not hope. For who hopes for what one sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait with endurance. Romans 8:24-25

One of my favorite saintly figures is Blessed Solanus Casey. Born in 1870 in Wisconsin, he died in 1957 as a Capuchin priest, but that end was not exactly what he’d hoped for early in his life.

Solanus Casey began studies for the diocesan priesthood but had a hard time with the German that was the vernacular of the seminary, and with the study of Latin, as well. He was accepted to the Capuchins, but he still struggled academically. Eventually, he was ordained as what was then called a simplex priest. He could celebrate Mass, but could not hear confessions or preach as his academic difficulties were taken to indicate a limited grasp of theology.

Solanus endured, though, and endured in hope. His simplex status meant he could not hear confessions or preach—not the future he envisioned for himself—but nor could he envision the future impact of the role he assumed for most of his ministry: the friary doorkeeper. In this capacity, he would greet the broken, the poor and those in material and spiritual need with prayer and consolation, sharing the love of God in ways he never could have foreseen.

Reflect: Think about ways God has turned your disappointments into good for you and for others.”

Another is:

Day 17

Therefore prepare your minds for action; discipline yourselves; set all your hope on the grace that Jesus Christ will bring you when he is revealed. 1 Peter 1:13 (NRSV-CE)

Does putting our ultimate hope in God’s mercy and eternal life with him lead to inaction here on earth?

It’s a centuries-old criticism of Christians, isn’t it? Promising pie in the sky so the masses won’t complain about their lot. That’s the claim.

It’s not the reality, of course. Look at our saints! Every one of them were people of profound faith and, yes, had hope in eternal life above all. They were women, men and even children who prioritized their spiritual lives, put God first and looked to heaven amid their hardships—including martyrdom—but who, at the same time, managed to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, tend to the prisoner and educate the ignorant all over the world in a way that no other earthly institution has ever done.
Setting their hopes on the grace Jesus would bring did just what Peter says here—prepared their minds for action.

It’s a tension to be sure, though, and a challenge—to know when we should act and to know when trusting God means to sit back and stop meddling. We must discern when our promptings to act are from God or from our own egos and, actually, a sign not of hope and trust but perhaps the opposite.

Pray: Lord, may hope help me discern how best to do your will.”

And a third and final sample is:

Day 30

I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work in you will continue to complete it until the day of Christ Jesus. Philippians 1:6

Here I am, writing the last day of this devotional, and my son is still dealing with that injury. At least we know what it is now: a torn ACL that, yes, requires surgery. Plans for the next few months are still shot. No change there.

But one thing has changed: Hope has entered the picture, and not just the natural hope that he’ll heal. After all, what have I been writing about anyway?

As I’ve reflected about hope rather intensely during this time, I’ve been challenged. Do I believe what I’m writing? Do I really think that the ultimate purpose of my son’s life—to serve the Lord and dwell with him in eternity—has been derailed by this setback? Of course not. Do I believe that he—and even I—can find fruit in this that might even help him—and me—cooperate even more with the good work the Lord has begun in us?

If I can say yes to those questions, perhaps I might have learned a little bit myself. And perhaps it wasn’t chance that brought me to this work after all.

Act: Consider all the elements of your life—good and bad—in the context of the confident hope that God is at work in your life.”

I hope those three sample chapters give you a feel for this wonderful little volume. I highlighted a few passages my first time through this book. Some of them are:

“Like Mary, God gifts us with signs of hope unexpectedly. Like Mary, journeying from her own home and singing praise to God, we share that gift—pilgrims of hope, all.”

“In confusing moments, it’s helpful to remember who’s given me this gift of life. The One who knows me and loves me beyond what I can imagine. The One who doesn’t leave me on my own either. He gives me, among other gifts, this virtue of hope: the trust that the journey of this life is taking me to life with him. The hope that each day he’s present with me, guiding.”

“In the verse above, Joseph has revealed his identity to those brothers who fear his vengeance. He assures them of his forgiveness, but more than that, he reminds them that even though he did suffer, God was able to use it for good. That’s hope. It’s not optimism that things will “work out” or “get better”—but, that no matter what, God is present and can use whatever is happening for his glory and for good.”

“I’m not designing or building cathedrals—but then, maybe I am in a way. Every small gesture, every seemingly thankless task, all the fruit of my labors—if I perform them in a spirit of gratitude, praise and sharing—have meaning and contribute to the life of beauty and goodness God calls us to build on earth. To live that way? That’s building on hope. Act: Dedicate an ordinary daily”

“Why were these people so afraid? What in the world had Jesus done to make them so fearful to the point where they demanded that he leave their area? Quite simply this: He’d healed a man. It was the demoniac—the man possessed by demons so deeply and painfully that he lived shackled among the tombs. Already dead, as far as the world was concerned, Jesus freed him. Freed him from possession and freed him to dwell among the living once again. It’s so fascinating to me that the people of the town, who knew the man and his suffering, who saw Jesus transform his life, responded not with gratitude, not by approaching Jesus with their own pains, but in fear. “Leave us.” Why would anyone reject such a sign that even in seemingly impossible circumstances hope is, yes, possible? And not only possible but as close as the man walking on the road over there? The One as close as the inner reaches of our soul? Good questions.”

“Even more so with this theological, spiritual virtue of hope. What God has in store for us—our redemption, our reconciliation—indeed, the reconciliation of all of creation, which is what Paul’s talking about in this whole chapter of the letter—is totally beyond our comprehension, isn’t it?”

This is a wonderful volume. I can easily recommend it. I plan on rereading it again later this Jubilee year, but because the meditations are just numbered 1-30 it can be picked up and read anytime this Jubilee Year of Hope or even after it has passed. This is a great volume that will inspire and challenge. I encourage you to pick it up and give it a try!

Just One More Thing Stories from My Life - Peter Falk - Cover 2

Over the last year I have alternated seasons of M*A*S*H* and Columbo. It was hard after ever season of Columbo not to just start the next. I because fascinated with Peter Falk while watching these made for TV movies. I wanted to read Falk’s autobiography Just One More Thing, but there is no eBook edition so I know it will take me a while to get around to reading it. But I have read a biography and 2 of the Columbo novels. Once I started reading this I could hardly put it down. It was as compelling as an episode of the show itself, and filled with far more humour.

This volume is not a typical autobiography. Sometimes he goes back and forth in time. Focuses on the people and places in his life. And it is mainly a storyteller telling tales about his life and adventures on and off the screen. There are just as many stories about being on the set as off. But the main thing is the people in his life, and his interactions with them. The book is also filled with pictures and numerous of Falk’s own drawings.

The chapters in the volume are:

epilogue

The book begins with these words:

“WHEN I WAS growing up, a biography was the life of Abe Lincoln. Today every fifth person is a legend or icon. I go into Nate and Al's, a delicatessen in Beverly Hills, and in the next booth there are three icons sitting there eating pastrami sandwiches.

so this is not an autobiography!

To be honest, I don't know what you'd call it. I know it's funny you'll laugh a lot. And when I talk about Columbo, it's interesting. He absorbed me

and how he evolved will absorb you.

There's a chapter on Marlon Brando. He never acted without wearing a plug in his ear. That's a fact and all of us actors were fascinated. When you read about it, I believe you will be as consumed as I was.”

And it concludes with these:

“M y AGENT CALLED the other day with an offer for a part in a new film. As always, my first question: "How much are they paying?" Some things never change. We can all say that about our lives, and there's some truth in it-some things never change It's certainly true in my case-but with one EXCEPTION. And that EXCEPTION just happened. I've just WRITTEN A BOOK! Talk about change! Who would dream I would ever write a book! Not me! Not my wife, not my doctor, dogs, family, friends, or acquaintances. Let me sum up by saying it was a blast! The funny stuff. Reliving it. Putting it on paper. If you had as much fun reading it as I had writing it, you'll be dancing on the ceiling. For those of you still in your chairs, I'm delighted you're still awake. I love you for staying with me until the end.”

I highlighted a few passages while reading this collection of stories some of them are:

“I'VE BEEN ASKED a few thousand times how much of Columbo is Falk and vice versa. For years I've had a stock answer 'Tm just as sloppy as the lieutenant but not nearly as smart." That was a quickie response for the media. They're drawn to anything that takes less than five seconds. The truth is, no one is like Columbo. He's unique-if he were up for auction, he would be described as "One of a kind-a human with the brain of Sherlock Holmes who dresses like the homeless."”

“WHY DID IT take so long to decide to be an actor? Obviously fear-fear of failure, but fear by itself is too simple. It was fear coupled with my highly romantic, ridiculously unrealistic notion of what constituted an actor.”

“THERE HAVE BEEN many descriptions of Columbo. My favorite is: Columbo is an ass-backward Sherlock Holmes.*
The above is perfect just as it is. But I'm a hog and can't help
adding to it. . . .
• Holmes has a long thin neck-Columbo has no neck.
• Holmes speaks the King's English-Columbo is still working on his.
• Holmes wears tailor-made British tweeds - Columbo's coat should be cleaned and burned.
• Oh, another good description-Being chased by Columbo is like being nibbled to death by a duck.”

This was a fascinating read. At the time of writing this review there are over 20 editions of this book and it has been published in at least 6 languages. It was interesting to learn about his life and the meandering route he took to become an actor. He states:

“So why did I wait forty-four years to take up drawing? I believed my delay was related to that naive notion that having to look while you're drawing was somehow cheating. However, claiming that naivete is involved is a tough sell. It sounds too dumb. Instead I see a definite pattern of delays in my life:
1 . It took twelve years for me to decide to become an actor.
2 . I didn't get married until I was 32.
3. It took 43 years for me to take up drawing, and another 31 years to go to watercolor.”

He is open about many of his faults. And many of his struggles. He shares successes, triumphs and some big mistakes. And he does it all in a self-effacing way. I knew he did other acting but was unaware of just how much. And this volume seems to give inside information on almost everything he was in. For fans of Columbo or fans of Falk in general this will be a fascinating read. Some of the stories of his capers are laugh out loud funny. And some are much more sombre. An excellent read!

Praying Around The Crib - Juliette Levivier and Anna Gravier - CTS Children’s Books

As of the reading of this book over the last few years I have read over 400 volumes from the Catholic Truth Society. I stumbled upon them while doing research on an author, and have been hooked ever since. This is the twelfth in the CTS Children’s Book Series that I have read. It is the sixth by Levivier that I have read. Overall I have not read many of the CTS Children's Books but I have loved those I have and I will continue to track down more.

The description of this book is:

“Prayers Around the Crib Juliette Levivier A joyful book for young children preparing for Christmas, which explains the meaning of the Advent season with its special calendar and wreath, the Christmas tree, the various figures of the Nativity scene including the angels, shepherds, the three Kings, Mary, Joseph, Jesus and more. Ages 5 and up.”

The description of the Ignatius edition states:

“A joyful book for young children preparing for Christmas, which explains the meaning of the Advent season with its special calendar and wreath, the Christmas tree, the various figures of the Nativity scene including the angels, shepherds, the three Kings, Mary, Joseph, Jesus and more. Each of these important Christmas symbols is explained with a little story followed by a simple, heartfelt prayer. Illustrated throughout with sweet four-color pictures.”

The sections in this book are:

Advent
The Advent calendar
The Christmas tree
The Advent wreath
Mistletoe and holly
The crib
The donkey
The ox
Mary
Joseph
Christmas – Jesus is born!
Christmas – Jesus come saves the world
Jesus will come again in glory
The Angels
The shepherds
The man overwhelmed with joy
The Miller
The other figures
The star
The three Kings
O come, all ye faithful!

A sample chapter is:

The donkey

Joseph also went up from Galilee,
from the city of Nazareth,
to Judea, to the city of David,
which 1s called Bethlehem,
because he was of the house and lineage of David.
Luke 2:4

The donkey that carried Mary from Nazareth to Bethlehem was lying on the straw. It was happy to be resting. It had traveled a long way. It was hot and thirsty. It had carried a heavy load but had walked on bravely. Joseph's Kind voice and Mary's gentle touch had helped it on its way.

Sometimes people say donkeys are stubborn or stupid. It's true that this donkey didn’t understand much, but it was gentle and brave, and was happy to serve.

Sometimes I'm asked to do difficult things too, but I can try my best to help.

Lord, there’s a place in your Church
for everyone. Everyone can be a servant.
Everyone has gifts he can bring.
Everyone is important.
‘Teach me not to look down on anyone
but to recognize each person’s worth.
Amen.

Another sample chapter is:

Joseph

When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the
angel of the Lord commanded him.
Matthew 1:24

Standing near Mary, Joseph prays and keeps watch. He doesn't speak much. Like all the fathers of the world who are represented by him, he watches over the child. Joseph leans on God and trustingly obeys him.

I don't always like to obey! Obeying God means letting yourself be loved and responding to that love. It means accepting his plan of love for you. We get close to God by obeying his Word and his Church. Truly, obedience is wonderful!

Lord,
I too want to come to you in silence
and offer you my life.
I want to pray in silence,
without speaking,
just contemplating you,
letting myself be guided,
letting myself be loved,
so that every day of my life
I may do what you ask of me.
Amen.

This is a wonderful little volume. It was great to read and pray through, I even added one of the prayers to my daily prayer list. Then we passed it along to our kids former Catholic Grade School. The Librarian has loved many of the CTS books we have donated over the years. I hope the sample chapters give you a feel for this volume. This is another excellent volume from the Catholic Truth Society. I am very thankful I picked it up and know it is one I will use often. A great resource I can easily recommend for church, home, or school library.

Downfall - Arthur Slade - Dragon Assassin Book 4

I read the three novellas contained in this novel a while ago. I loved the whole Dragon Assassin World. I decided to reread the whole series in these new editions. But I am getting ahead of myself a bit. When I first read these stories back in 2018-2022 and Art had planned to release a shorter story each month for a year, however that did not quite happen. There was however 12 novellas released in this format. Later he rereleased them in Omnibus edition, and then recently I discovered there were only available as novels. The original novellas were:

     Twin Fury
     Dark Wings
     Bitterwaters
     Elder Magic
     Royal Blood
     Old Enemies
     Downfall
     Deathwings

The Novel (omnibus editions break down like this:

Twin Fury
     Twin Fury
     Dark Wings
Royal Blood
     Bitterwaters
     Elder Magic
     Royal Blood
Burning Empire
Downfall
     Old Enemies
     Downfall
Deathwings
     Deathwings

Still later in their evolution Scholastic Canada released some of them in Canada in print format. But back to the volume at hand. The description of this book states:

An ancient enemy rises from the seas...

Brax and Carmen are exploring the ocean when they come across the dead body of a dragon on an island. He was an outcast, living far away from Drachia. And he was just recently killed. It turns out that an old enemy that the dragons believed were all destroyed have returned. And they want revenge. One dead dragon at a time...

But the only way to defeat the mightiest of giants is to face him on his home turf. It is a land like nothing Carmen has ever seen. On a royal mission, Carmen travels to the land of giants. A fabled country that no mortal has visited for thousands of years (and lived). It will be a challenge unlike any other. It's a good thing she has Thord on her side. And one more ally she never dreamed she'd see again.

This special omnibus edition contains episodes 9-10 of the bestselling series:
9. Old Enemies - It turns out that the old enemy that the dragons believed were all destroyed have returned. And they want revenge.
10. Downfall - On a royal mission, Carmen travels to a fabled country that no mortal has visited for thousands of years (and lived). It will be a challenge unlike any other.

It’s a non-stop young adult adventure from best-selling author Arthur Slade. Perfect for fans of Dragon Riders of Pern, Dragon School, Eragon and The Brindle Dragon series.

Up until now I had assumed that the Dragon’s were the most powerful creatures in the world. There may be some wizards that could rival a dragon one on one, but nothing that appeared to be able to beat them in physical combat. That has all changed. We are soon embroiled in a war. Between the creatures that have returned and the Dragons. Surprising tactics are used. Carem realizes some of the tactics being used, but once Brax loses his temper almost all is lost.

This time her close dragon friend Brax is broken and near death’s door. She is on a royal mission to find a way to save the dragons from a smallish purple wizard Giant and the horde of young giants under his song spell. She is on a new mount a flying black swan named after her mother. Her friend Thord has answered her call for help, and off the two must go to the land of Giants that no one knew existed or has any ideal where it is. Thord has been changed by the bear heart that has been implanted in his chest. And his new Bearish nature and tendencies is another new thing to content with.

Without her wisecracking Dragon partner. Can she pull off the impossible again? With a snarky Swan, and her friend be enough? What will they find when and if they reach the land of Giants? And will they find a way to save the dragons or will they all be wiped away by Zarek?

The story reminds me of Zelanzy’s Amber books and also a bit like The Last Namsara by Kristen Ciccarelli fans of both will appreciate this new story. This is an excellent fantasy story, by a wonderful writer. Fans of fantasy will really appreciate the craft in the telling of this tale. It is an excellent book and I recommend you pick it up and give it a read! I have already read these stories a few times. A great read in a wonderful series.

The Gospel of Luke ESV - Fr John Hemer MHM - CTS Scriptures

This was the third of the standalone gospels I have read from the new English Standard Version translation; which was introduced as the new lectionary edition at the beginning of Advent 2024 in England, Scotland and Wales. I have read a few volumes about the new lectionary and eagerly awaited these new Gospel booklets. I have decided to read a chapter of the gospels a day for the year, and will alternate the ESV editions just released and the older Jerusalem Bible editions I have read a few times over the years. By reading 1 chapter a day you will complete the 4 gospels 4 times and have time to start again.

I love the books and booklets from the Catholic Truth Society. Over the last 7 years I have read over 400 books and booklets from the CTS. And have many on my ‘to be read’ list. The description of this volume is:

“St Luke is believed to have been a physician and a companion of St Paul as well as the author of the Acts of the Apostles. His Gospel is particularly known for the attention he gives to the birth of Jesus and his early life. From these stories the Church takes the great liturgical prayers of the Magnificat and the Benedictus.

This special edition of the Gospel of Luke, with an introduction by Fr John Hemer MHM, is published to mark the introduction of the ESV-CE translation in new the Catholic lectionary for England, Scotland and Wales. This book allows the reader to read and contemplate the words of the Gospel precisely as it is proclaimed at Mass in Year C of the lectionary cycle.”

This  volume and the gospel of John has an introduction by Fr John Hemer MHM, about him we are informed:

“Fr John Herner is a Mill Hill missionary priest. He comes from Liverpool and was ordained in 1983. He has done missionary work in Pakistan, Kenya and Uganda. At present he is a lecturer and member of the formation staff at Allen Hall seminary in Chelsea, London.”

I highlighted a few passages from the introduction, some of them are:

“The first paragraph of St Luke's Gospel is the longest sentence in the whole New Testament and one of the most difficult to translate from the original Greek.”

“And if we boil down that first sentence into a few words, basically Luke is saying, ''I've done my homework, and this is what I've come up with." In other words, Luke tells us that his gospel, which the Church rightly considers a sacred text, is the product of reasoned enquiry, of research and of a degree of human ingenuity.”

“Luke is often called the gospel of mercy. He has so much to say about God's mercy; at the heart of the gospel we find three great stories of mercy - the Lost Sheep, the Lost Coin and the Lost Son, and then a quirky parable about the strange ways in which God's mercy sometimes works, the Dishonest Steward.”

“So, according to Luke, this idea that the Old Testament pointed to Jesus and that it was fulfilled in him was not something cooked up by his disciples after the crucifixion, it's the opinion of Jesus himself. Jesus expresses the same thing also in John chapter 5.”

I love the little booklet format from the CTS. I love this new English Standard Version booklet as well the older Jerusalem Bible Edition. Historically the Jerusalem Bible is my favourite for just sitting and reading. Maybe because it was the one I was given in school during first communion prep, or because it was the first I read from cover to cover. But I am giving this new translation a fair chance and plan to read these gospel booklets and the whole bible this year. This booklet and the others and the Larger Print counterpart are excellent resources. I recommend them to you.

My son who is 16 has and asked for a set of these little booklets, for his own. I also picked up a complete bible in the ESV-CE edition for my youngest two children and myself. It is an excellent resource from the Catholic Truth Society! It is great to pick up and read or to pass on to a friend, or to keep on hand to be able to give away. I love these little booklets of the gospels from the CTS and look forward to reading the last remaining volume in the collection. I can easily recommend this booklet edition of the Gospel of Luke!
