This was an excellent story, and conclusion to the quartet. It is my great loss that it took me so long to get around to reading this series. More about that below. Every time I read a book by Fabian, no matter the series, I think ‘it can’t get better than this’ and yet somehow it almost most often does. This story took me completely by surprise. And yet it is the fourth in a series. I had had the eBooks of the original edition since 2011 and 2013 but had not got around to reading them. Last year I reached out to Fabian and was informed that the series was being rebranded and republished this year, more on that below. For some reason I kept skipping over this series even though I have read almost everything Fabian has in print, and some out of print I tracked down. That was my great loss; after reading this whole series can state they are excellent books and I really wished I had read them sooner. This was an excellent read in a fantastic series!
The description of this volume states:
“Their love survived asylum intrigue, mortal danger, and even alien worlds. How hard can a wedding be?
Finally, Sachiko is marrying Joshua! But the wedding she dreamed of is turning into a nightmare. Her Japanese grandmother has bought her wedding kimono, but not only is it psych-ward pink, but it also comes with a tsunokakushi, the traditional headdress to “hide her horns of jealousy and independence.” Her stubborn independence may be all that gets her through the crazy days before the wedding. Joshua’s fame means she’s getting touted and berated as “the future Mrs. Joshaham.” Not to mention, everyone else is planning their big day but her.
She copes by concentrating on her internship, yet even that goes awry when, two days before the wedding, her efforts to save a patient’s life leave him in a permanent coma. To top it off, her cousins get Joshua so drunk, he nearly drowns at his own bachelor party! Can she find the right balance of independence and humility to navigate the disasters and capture the joy of her wedding day?.”
I said volume one was an intense powerful story, book 2 took it to a whole new level. Volume three changed it up both in size and scale. This one focuses mainly on Joshua and Sachiko, and to be fully honest the majority of the focus is on Sachiko and how she is handling the wedding prep, family, stress, her soon to be husbands’ celebrity status and her own anxieties. Not to mention a patience who she just performed neuro surgery upon as the story begins.
In many ways this story is far tamer than the others in the series. And though there are mentions of a few things, for the most part this is a real time story, and not the epic fantast of the other three. The books and series remind me so much of L’Engle’s works, or a more modern version of them. But of the other three would fit in her Kairos series, this one would fit more with here Chronos stories. It was still great to have a visit from Deryl, Tasmae and their daughter Stormageddon oops I mean Hope.
This story is fiction written incredibly well. Real world, real problems, and just a few mishaps on the path to walking down the aisle. This is Christian fiction written very well. It reminds me so much of L’Engle’s works.
In the acknowledgements at the end of the first story Kabian informs us this story was based on a shorter work originally written in 1986. It was first published in 2010 by Dragon Moon. She states:
“Fast forward to 2010, and Dragon Moon. Gwen Gades loved the book, but hated the title (which was Asylum Psychic.) She held the contract hostage until I had a better title. I went to my great friends at The Writers Chat Room (writerschatroom.com) who brainstormed with me until we came up with Mind Over… Mind Over Mind was the first; then Mind Over Psyche and Mind Over All. I couldn’t squeeze the Joshua/Sachiko wedding in, and some readers complained, so I completed the set with Hearts Over Mind.”
and also:
“In 2023, I got the rights to the Mind Over trilogy back, just as an editor friend was telling me how much she’d loved the books. Thus encouraged by Rebecca Martin, I decided to republish them. I was never sold on the title, especially Mind Over Psyche, so I asked my friends at the Catholic Writers Guild for suggestions. Mark Baker came up with Madness of Kanaan: Madness Bound, Madness Unbound, Madness of Worlds, and Madness of Love.
So much love and adventure went into this book. Thanks again to all my supporters and to the gracious God who led me to this calling.”
This book is another amazing read from the ever masterful pen of Karin Fabian. I regret not having read this series earlier. Do not make my mistakes pick this up and read the book and series. It is certain to entertain. Another amazing read by Fabian.
